Westgate Basketball's origins date back to 2012 when it started as a 12 team youth competition playing at the Community Sports Stadium at Whitten Oval in Footscray. Two years later Westgate entered it's first Imperials team Victoria's state-wide Representative Basketball competition, the VJBL.
In 2024 Westgate's youth competition now hosts over 240 teams and our VJBL program has grown to 26 teams. This year was also our first season in BigV with our Youth League 2 Men's team competing in this senior state-wide competition. Our Open Age competition has nearly 30 men's and women's teams and our Aussie Hoops youth program regularly has over 200 kids register each school term.
With over 3,000 members, Westgate Basketball is one of the fastest growing basketball associations in Victoria which has been driven by a dedicated volunteer base from our Imperials VJBL program through to our 10 affiliated domestic clubs. Westgate has been recognised by Basketball Victoria and Maribyrnong City Council for providing high quality programs from our work with the VJBL to our youth programs.
Westgate are hoping to expand their services to the inner-west community with the City of Maribyrnong's commitment to a new indoor facility at McIvor Reserve (Yarraville) and are looking for other opportunities to meet the growing demand for youth basketball across the inner-west.
